I am an artist, an amateur and mostly untrained one, but even I feel this inherent “drive” or one could even say almost like a“need” to create. I usually draw more than use any other medium for art. When I feel this need nothing will make me feel better other than sitting down with paper and pencil and creating a drawing.
I often feel this drive when I have been inspired by someone else’s well executed work. And that makes perfect sense. But I also feel it when I haven’t drawn or created in awhile. In these times I am not inspired but feel this overwhelming powerful urge or desire to create. It is more difficult to create art when one does not have a singular vision or idea, but sometimes you end up with the best works in that situation once you put pencil or brush or charcoal to paper.
I was thinking about this drive and need and wondered where it comes from. It would seem the more creative of a mind one has the stronger the urge or feeling of need ones has to create with it. I wonder if this is built into us in some way the desire to use what skills we have to further our situation. But creating art is not a basic survival skill like seeking food, water, or shelter. Or is it somehow as essential of a skill as those others in some way?
Any others care to weigh in? Where does this creative drive for art come from? Is it possibly as essential to humanity as the basic life skills needed for survival?
I would love to hear any thoughts anyone else has on these topics.

Like you, I find that I get inspired by checking out other artists. I like spending my time at art museums and checking out the art that fits my own preconceptions of what art is, and that works well for getting inspired with the “how.” But like, sometimes you just gotta check out the art you think is a hot mess, man. Because that’s where you’re gonna find inspiration for the “why.”Creativeness is like a frame of mind man. Not everyone can abide that way. And if you can, you’re special. Embrace that drive to create. Do what makes you happy and whatever like, ties your life together. If that’s painting naked lady friends, then paint naked lady friends. If it’s weaving baskets underwater for the blind, then get to weaving. Creativity can be a use it or lose it commodity. Not many know where the drive comes from, but I do know you should use it, or life could take it back as mysteriously as it gave it.

I am a writer. I have never had anything published but I am driven to write. I do so because there seems to be a tap in my head that is constantly pouring out ideas, concepts, stories, characters. If i dont write them down it feels like my head is too full, like there is an itch that I havent scratched. Anything and everything can inspire this stream of ideas from an image on a screen to listening to the conversation of people passing by. Something inside my head clicks and the tap starts to pour forth concepts

I have drawn since I was a little kid. It’s helped me, aling with Bob Ross, abide the bullshit going on in my family. I’m not formally trained in a standard sense of art.
I’m a tattoo artist, the low brow or “hot mess” of the art world. I used to draw tattoos on myself when I was young. That was cool. That was cool.
You’re question is far out, man; where does it come from? It my case I think it was a case of paper vs. people. It’s like, you can draw on the wall or you can make that connection & draw it on a person. They live and breath the art that you live and breath.
So without all the blathering I’ll say fuck it. To me it doesn’t much matter from wence it came. It exists & in pure form. Light, color, shading is all, man.
So maybe the beauty of one’s mind and the collision of the world or your special lady friend, whatever you find beauty in. It’s an is.
And for an artist you gotta feed the monkey of creation. Enjoy it. It’ll be the tenth soon enough.
