In my many travels across the country (about 5 times a year) I have found the best way to relax and enjoy a trip from Washington too South Carolina, is not to wait and pull off to stop on the way back. When you drive past a magnificent scene or a run down town, don’t say I’ll get out and take a photo later. Get out and take it now, dance in the headlights at midnight to that song you and your lover enjoy soo much. Don’t be cheap get the hotel room, even if it is a 30 dollar dive because those memories will never be forgot and because if you are around SD or Montana in the winter putting down your back seat and sleeping in the car is no fun at all.
I have found at 34 I’ve drove through 35 states and driving for me is the most relaxing way to see the country and go on vacation. Also doing it while I am young and not waiting for retirement and old age has allowed me to enjoy my time visiting these places all the more. You can literally load up your car and within a week find work in another state and begin again. It is a soul soothing though nomadic way of life and one I suggest to any one getting into the field of geopsychology.
