The modernized usage of ‘Cosmic Cowboy’ has been co-opted by Advertising & rampant mercantilism to be re-defined merely as: ‘A Dude Equally Comfortable in either Urban and/or Rural settings’. The more proper, Classical Definition is: “a Dude who Busks, or Has Busked, Born in (or around) the Space Age, comfortable enough in his Own Skin to Abide wherever he may find his (or her) Rest”In Either case: ” A Cosmic Cowboy embraces New Ways of doing things (Cosmic) while remembering the Heritage(s) that make Dudes Great (Cowboy)”. The Prototypical Cosmic Cowboy is usually associated with the luminary musicians who originated the ‘Outlaw Music’ movement (eg a rejection in part or total of the Nashville , LA, and/or NY Musical Machines), as exemplified by the ‘Lukenbach Late-Nite Loungers’, the ‘Armadillo World Headquarters Head-Cases’ and the ‘Kerrville Campers & Caballeros’.
Often confused and/or conflated with “Southern Fried” or “Redneck Rock” and the more modern “Outlaw Country” , the Cosmic Cowboy sound predates both. The Historical context of the ‘Cosmic Cowboy’ differs significantly from modern ‘slang’ Usage, and should not be confused with the far more common ‘Space Cowboy’
