Culture and civilization can make a lot more sense when looked at via the lens of Robert Kegan’s stage theory of development. This author posits three relevant stages: Pre-rational, Rational and Meta-rational, correlating to Kegan’s interpersonal, institutional, and interindividual. (There are other ways to name them: Socialized, Self-authoring and Self-transforming.)
In understanding how our consciousness becomes ever more inclusive of various points of view, we don’t have to succumb to the nihilism of some postmodernist thinkers. The author of the website sees postmodernism as a gap between the last two stages rather than a stage in itself.
